To be In the Middle is to be choicelessly aware of all that is.
I first became aware of this saying through reading Pillars of Consciousness, a book written by the guru Osho, given to me by a friend some years ago. Buddha is responsible for this saying, “to be in the middle”. In the middle means not one or the other – neither! Choicelessly aware of all that is. When we are conscious in a choiceless way we can embrace everything. Can you imagine in life being in non-attachment state in all things? Sounds impossible right? On the other hand, how is it not the case naturally, if at my core I am Divine?
When we are born, the experience of being rejected by the mother and pushed into the world creates vast amounts of fear and aloneness. We would call this Separation Consciousness (separation from Divine). This fear causes us to act out on the need to be safe by judging everything, forming attachments and opinions to cope with the feeling of being alone. We call these false belief systems and they reside in the mind. These are our recipes and rules for life.
When you have let go of all opinions and attachments to either of the extremes the extremes disappear! You have arrived in the middle. But wait, if there are no extremes then there will not be a middle either.
Extremes are not really opposites but complimentary sides of a concept, all part of a process of the whole. All complimentaries contribute to the whole and whole is the ‘goal’ (which is the journey)! To understand this is to liberate and transform yourself from all sides and the middle!
Unity of all complimentaries and the middle is all-inclusive.
So the question remains - HOW??
Staying in the process, continuing along the journey, requires an expansive daily practices that allows you to integrate this new perspective and drop the opinionated mind. In my experience, on my journey, The BodyTalk System and Conscious Living Investigation are my daily practice on my path - I hope you will join me!
“I have nothing to offer”, said my friend.
It is everyone else’s burden to make up
for what I won’t contribute – Myself!
Erich Fromm once wrote, “no great radical idea can survive unless it is embodied in individuals whose lives are the message.” The transformed self is the medium. The transformed life is the message.
Why make my awareness practice second nature?
Everything is me – I am my own teacher!
Commitment to daily awareness practices has become a way of life for me. The stress in my life a few years ago was so great and nothing I ‘tried’ seemed to help. The drugs, physical fixes, vacations, emotional therapies, diets, and coping activities (-aholic therapy) did not work to ease my pain. I was looking for a fast, one-time forever fix, and of course, nothing worked. What I didn’t understand is that I wasn’t broken. What I needed to do was find the middle inside myself. The place beyond the intellectual and emotional mind of unconditional, the place of non-judgmental love and gratitude for myself, just as I am.
We are all capable of living the Middle Way.
This is your invitation to join me in your own process to live your Middle Way.
There is no quick fix! In fact, there isn’t even an destination. This process requires you to keep showing up every moment of every day because it’s a journey, it is only a journey with no beginning and no end.
The process is the key – focus on the journey instead of the end goal; the means are the end and the journey is the destination! Learning rather than storing information; caring rather than keeping; participating rather than postponing; opportunities rather than conflicts. There is the courage inside you to commit all your energy to the practice of self awareness.
This is a moment to moment attention you do out of love and understanding for yourself, in the pursuit of wholeness. It is your only purpose in this dimension on this planet! Whether you accomplish this as a plumber, teacher, or health practitioner, it doesn’t matter. The only process you have in this life is the journey resolving yourself. Activities are done with the awareness that in this very moment is an opportunity to realize your Divine wholeness with all the Universe. Therefore, wholeness is also a process.
There is only one thing in the way – my fear-based mind! My mind tells me that this process is impossible and futile, definitely not worth the effort!
“The Great Smoking Mirror” is a Cheyenne saying. The great smoke screen of my personal illusions can be pierced when I am willing to look at myself and see that my obsession with my personal self is a myth. The part of the fearful self that insists on being only one is shattered by the realization that every life-form holds an equal part to the solution of my wholeness.
My fear-based mind fractures myself, and to keep me safe it hides pieces of me in everything all over the world both close and far from me. The criticism of myself and others holds no weight in this true light of the self-reflection. The smoke screen can no longer operate! All I need to do is break the cycle of the false illusion! For most of us this requires a steady committed effort, kind of like hammering a nail. (Think of all the misadventures that can arise when you hammer in a nail).
There is a Mayan saying “I am another one of myself”. Every life form reflects every other life form and all originate from the same Source. Unity eliminates all types of elitist ideas and Separation Consciousness. The view that all other humans are unique expressions of myself would eliminate the need for war and conflicts.
So I have chosen to fall in love and gratitude for every exiled part of me and welcome it home without the need to judge it or fix it. This is the philosophical process that I choose to walk and live – not just talk about as an idealistic, intellectual goal.
The fourth dimension not another place; is a process immanent within us.
Perhaps you, my dear reflections, will choose to join me?
